Nel cast figurano Fiona O'Shaughnessy, Alexandra Roach e Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. La serie è ambientata a Londra ma le riprese si sono svolte dall'aprile all'ottobre 2012 nella zona di Liverpool. La serie è un thriller cospirativo, che racconta la storia dei cinque possessori del sequel di una graphic novel, The Utopia Experiments, il quale contiene delle informazioni segrete su una potenziale arma di distruzione di massa. Essi sono il bersaglio di una pericolosa organizzazione chiamata The Network, capeggiata dal misterioso Mr. Rabbit, che tenterà con qualsiasi mezzo di procurarsi il manoscritto e conoscere il segreto di Utopia. L'obiettivo del Network però non è solo quello, ma anche trovare "Jessica Hyde", una ragazza fuggitiva che si unirà presto al gruppo dei protagonisti e che sembra essere di vitale importanza per l'organizzazione. Una bomba. Altro non si può dire di questa piccolissima serie, che come nessun'altra negli ultimi anni è riuscita a catalizzare l'attenzione del pubblico più attento e smaliziato. Regia brillante, sceneggiatura intrigante, fotografia accesa e rutilante, una colonna sonora originalissima, piccole e a volte sublimi interpretazioni, un finale spiazzante quanto conclusivo e, a sorpresa... una seconda stagione in cantiere! Gli inglesi colpiscono ancora e dimostrano, nel caso qualcuno non l'avesse ancora capito, che loro la fanno meglio di tutti. Che cosa? Ma la televisione, of course. Utopia, nella sua secchissima brevità, è una visione che sfrutta appieno il mezzo mediatico a cui appartiene: la nuova televisione. Uno schermo non più catodico, ma allargato su nuove definizioni, nuovi colori, nuovi ritmi, ma che non dimentica quelle pause domestiche che allontanano dall'immagine, fosse solo per una corsa in bagno o in cucina... La trama è semplice e complessa al tempo stesso, come per dire che, anche se a spiegarla in due parole sembra la solita cosa vista e stravista, in verità non lo è. Da qualche parte c'è (forse) un complotto. In mezzo ci capitano un pugno di sfigati che peggio non si può e che non hanno la minima idea di che cosa fare e, soprattutto, come non rimetterci le penne. Tutte le domande, comunque, avranno alla fine una risposta. E non sarà una risposta banale. Anzi. Perché il complotto stesso (sì, c'è davvero), alla fine, si rivelerà qualcosa che costringerà più di uno spettatore a guardare anche dentro se stesso... Certo, neppure questa serie è senza peccato. Qualche calo lo si ha, qualche piccola incertezza qua e là la si trova anche. Ma sono peccati veniali. Il 99.9% della serie è genialità allo stato puro. Non ci credete? Channel 4 è lo stesso canale che si è inventato Misfits, tanto per dirne una. E Utopia, come Misfits, è una serie che va oltre gli schemi, oltre il già visto o, ancor meglio, fa di tutto ciò che si è stravisto qualcosa di completamente inedito. A partire da quel "Where is Jessica Hyde?", che si rivelerà alla fine qualcosa di più di un tormentone... Ma sto dicendo troppo. E' ora di guardare le immagini e lasciare che loro stesse si giustifichino davanti ai vostri occhi. Imperdibile il sito ufficiale della serie, The Utopia Inquiry, per scoprire (davvero) quanto tempo impiegherebbero a trovarvi, nel caso dovessero eliminarvi, chi tiene i fili del mondo in cui vivete e che cosa sareste disposti a fare per sopravvivere... A second series of Utopia has been commissioned. The story follows a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called "The Utopia Experiments" which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organisation known as 'The Network', which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality. *** Sinister cogs were turning over in Utopia (Channel 4), the atmospheric new six-part conspiracy thriller from Matilda the Musical co-writer Dennis Kelly. It swiftly set out its stall with a bracingly brutal opening, as two assassins (Neil Maskill and Paul Ready) – a little cartoonish but no less menacing for that – by turns bludgeoned and suffocated the staff and customers of a comic-book store. These enforcers for the shady outfit known as “The Network” were on the trail of one Jessica Hyde – unseen until the final frame – and the manuscript of the sequel to a graphic novel called The Utopia Experiment with reputedly crystal-ball powers. Soon, they were also after the engagingly nerdy members of a chat forum dedicated to the tome. Heaps more violence ensued, supremely one protracted and particularly excruciating torture scene. Despite favouring cruelly deployed chillies over a dentist’s drill, this episode – and indeed the entire programme’s creeping fog of paranoia – was more than a little reminiscent of John Schlesinger’s Marathon Man (“Is it safe?”), and Utopia’s nods to big-screen thrillers by no means stopped there. The murderous brace of heavies was pure Shallow Grave, their portable gas canister was part Blue Velvet, part No Country for Old Men. The torture victim escaped (hurrah!) by using a trick from Lethal Weapon 2 of all things, and a Donnie Darko/Sexy Beast-like man-rabbit even lolloped briefly into view. Still, if this first episode was allusive to a fault, and rather self-consciously provocative, it was also gripping stuff.
